vidding posted: Submitting To Conventions Showing Fan Made Music Videos (LONG) - Vidding discussion
Every convention operates differently. At the end of this message is a list of conventions that accept submitted vids. As always, if you attend, you will most likely get your vids shown. For non-attending vidders, the convention may look to see how many vids they have of X fandom, is your vid in a known fandom, does it fit in with the theme of the convention (slash/gen/fandom specific convention) and time constraints. So if my vid does not make it into a vid show, I try to not take it personally. Vid shows are for a diverse congoing audience, not necessarily just the vidders, and the shows are a big draw.

I've done some reading online but no one is answering these questions. My mom is gong for cataract surgery on both eyes. Eye 1 will be first and then a month later eye 2 She is nearsighted and needs to wear glasses to walk, eat, drive, watch TV, move about safely

1. During the one month between the 2 operations - how will she see? Her old glasses will not work on Operated Eye. I've read some people had to pop out the one lens of the old glasses so they can see

2. During the weeks after Second Eye surgery she will have even worse vision. Neither eyes will be able to see through her old glasses. They will give her a new prescription BUT.......

The doctor told her they will not give her a new prescription until one month after her second surgery. It will then take another 4-6 weeks for those new glasses to be made. What is she supposed to do for those 2 months? She is a senior at risk for falls and relies on good vision to walk safely

The new lens will most likely be fixed to give her 20/20 long distance vision.  She will have to use reading glasses or bifocals to read. She will also have problems with computer work - most progressives offer too small a 'slice' for middle vision (computer work)

As a former Vidder I want to highlight how it can be entertaining for the audience to see their favourite shows in a new way and also how it offers the artists a chance to be creative as well. Many thanks, Carlotta Montella.

I've been nominating fanvids for BDP-SF every year, and I'd be very happy if more people joined me! (This year I nominated
The Greatest by bironic and Straightening Up the House by eruthros, either or both of which would've been far more interesting and exciting than two episodes each of The Good Place and Doctor Who. Though I am really pleased about Dirty Computer making it onto the ballot.)

[Unknown LJ tag] posted: AO3 was supposed to host vids and fanart. Why has it not 10+ years later?

The spaghetti code got the better of them. There's a lot of other features they can't implement because of it, like making the archive multi-lingual or uploading vids or basically any new feature......

It seems like the obvious way to do it would be to make a new art.archiveofourown.org subdomain, and then simply have that be a completely separate system with a separate search. People who want fic go to the regular site, people specifically doing fanart go to the subdomain. Even embedding images hosted on the fanart side in fics would still work.

AO3 comes up with some bizarre requirements for how things need to be organized, though, so it wouldn't surprise me if separating art from fic that way is off the table for some weird ideological reason.

[Unknown LJ tag] posted: Living in Hope is a Discipline: Fire Logic by Laurie J. Marks - the final novel is set to be released on June 4th.

Terrible things happen to people in this novel, but the novel is not about terrible things happening to people. It’s about their whole-hearted survival.

As an example of how Marks’s ethos of constructive optimism structures the text, I’ll point toward the calm pleasure I felt in realizing that, for all the violence and abuse that occurs in Shaftal, gender and sexuality exist in a space of unremarkable equity. Homophobia and sexism are not considerations or powers with which to be reckoned. While rape exists and is acknowledged—as are murder, torture, political assassination, genocide—the potential for victimization is not directed with exploitive and lavish attention toward the punitive destruction of women’s bodies, or brown bodies, or queer bodies, or all of the above.

The couples (and moresomes) featured in romantic connections throughout the book are in fact predominantly and wonderfully queer: Karis and Zanja as well as Emil and Medric pair up, out of our protagonists. Norina is a woman in a relationship with a man, but Marks has cleverly illustrated the functions of gender in Shaftal’s social order therein as well. Norina is a Truthken, a lawgiver and sometimes-soldier, while her husband is a healer—and when she becomes pregnant, the irritation of carrying a child is explicitly noted as a thing she wishes he biologically was doing. He’s also the primary caregiver for the baby once the child is born. Their approaches to their roles are individual and specific rather than gendered in the “expected” manner.

It hearkens back, in my mind, to classic feminist, queer SF. Marks has built a world in the shape that Joanna Russ wrote about critically, that Le Guin imagined and so forth, where gender is not swap-reversed or rendered implausibly invisible. Rather, questions of production, labor, time, and privilege are constructed around the presumption of creating equity. There is a subtle brilliance to that considered and thoughtful approach to a world without patriarchal oppression. And it also means that sometimes, for instance, colonial brutality is meted out as much from a woman’s hands as a man’s, as much by soldiers as politicians as citizens.

People die of starvation because of political barriers and supply chain problems, not scarcity.

In my future, these supply chain problems are solved, and the political ecosystem acknowledges and values the economic contributions of every human. That may sound utopian, but it’s not, because…

“Frankly, your humble reporter can take “Star Trek "or leave it; it has about as high a corn  content as most of the action series. ” Pure" science fiction isn’t.

“Save Star Trek” echoes in my head like a battle cry. It stirs my blood and jiggles my glands it gives me hope, hope that people are still stronger than computers, hope that the democratic process is still not entirely in the hands of Univac.

Yes, let’s save “Star Trek.” Let us bombard NBC with letters, telegrams, phone calls. Let us swamp the network in paper, glut the hallways under unopened envelopes. Let us make a fearsome racket, not because Star Trek is important, because our individual human dignity is important. Surely we are all fed up with the mystical omniscience of the poll and the rating book, tired of smug tyranny of Madison-Avenue nose-counters.

I think we are all tired of anonymity, tired of the feeling that we are powerless to influence invent events as individuals. We may not be able to change the course of events in Vietnam, but perhaps we still have the power to make a giant corporation squirm. If so, we are still men. “

Simon Pegg and Nick Frost, the folks behind Shaun of the DeadHot Fuzz, and The World’s End, a.k.a. the Cornetto trilogy, are taking on another series: Ben Aaronovitch’s Rivers of London, an urban fantasy procedural in which aspiring detective Peter Grant finds himself working for The Folly, Scotland Yard’s department of supernatural beings. Frost and Pegg’s production company Stolen Picture will adapt the first book in the Peter Grant series for television (with Sony Pictures Television), with Aaronovitch also serving as an executive producer.

I require the source for a very short lived television show that aired 2010-11 called “Shattered” and while I KNOW and have faith that many CKR fangirls that proceed me have celebrated and shared this source, I’m coming in almost a decade later making gimme hands and heart eyes but times have changed and there is a new show called Shattered and an ID docuseries and it’s all a mess and I CANNOT FIND IT.

Hi everyone! I'm fairly new to vidding and have been trundling along happily so far just learning to use Lightworks and getting the editing basics down. But now I'm starting to edge toward things like paying attention to picture quality and converting files into more editable formats, etc. I will read up on some of the previous posts people have shared (I see there was a recent discussion about how to deal with mkvs, which I've also recently been struggling with!), but my question for today is:

For vidders who work in Windows and use Lightworks to edit, what codec works best for your editing? And what software do you use to convert your various kinds of source files into that desired codec?

Thank you so much for any advice, it's much appreciated!

All the Pros vids I could track down at AO3 divided into 2 lists: by Vidder & by Song. The vidder list includes the vidders' own titles for their vids & their summary. The song list uses the title of the song, which sometimes differs from the vid title.

This year I decided to make a vidshow about how much I hate capitalism. (I’m not kidding.) The working, and probably actual, title is “Be Gay, Do Crimes”.  It will be vid show on queers and marginalized folk doing what they gotta to survive under capitalism/the patriarchy/etc.

PLEASE don’t steal work from vidders.
Whether it is reuploading a video, or taking clips from their edit and passing the editing off as your own, PLEASE DON’T.

Make things that are bad, silly, self indulgent.
Making that silly middle school-esque fanvid was the most fun I had video editing in a while. I went to uni for media, I got graded on my editing. It can kill the fun.  Make things that are bad, silly, self indulgent. Just make things because you want to. Don’t let perfectionism kill ideas.

seekingferret: Wiscon Vids/Database Vids
But it strikes me that vids like "Transmission" and [personal profile]eruthros's "Straightening Up the House", which got its own 7.5K creation essay, are vids that in an essential way may reflect an emerging Wiscon aesthetic that is meaningfully different from VVC-style vids. These are vids that are created by vidders fluent in the VVC house style, but they have the DNA of academic research projects in them as well. Vids are always attractive to me because of the information density they're capable of conveying, but "Transmission" and "Straightening Up the House" intentionally throw more information at you than you can absorb, while making you aware that they are doing this. The kiloword creation essay is an essential part of the art. You can simply sit back and watch "Transmission" and enjoy it, but you do so with the full awareness that you are not seeing everything the vidder has to say. I feel like that stands in confrontational opposition to the idea of Vid as Essay, which is so often essential to understanding VVC vids.

I picked up Sony Vegas 14 at HumbleBundle a while back, and finally got around to installing it.
I want to make a vid. I want to make a vid I know damn well nobody else will make, so I guess I gotta learn vidding.
However, the vid I want to make is complicated and involves several sources from different eras, which I know is a pain. So first, I gotta make an easy-for-beginners vid to get used to the software.

All this Endgame excitement is really overflowing my brain with ideas for vids. But my only experience with making fanvids goes back more than a decade with a borrowed copy of DVD Shrink and Window Movie Maker on a computer that wasn't really equipped to handle either, and I always wanted something that would let me layer video in more ways that WMM would allow.

______________________________________________________________
On the plus side, this little exercise in frustration made me finally fully update my index of Vids by Song (I have 3 indexes: by Song, by Vidder, & by Fandom; the other 2 are complete, but I started the Song database later on, so I never got it fully done). Next time I get convinced I have a vid set to a certain song, I want to be able to go directly to the song itself & see! Not combing through every single vid.

I have no video editing skills or free time to acquire them in, unfortunately, but if I did I would definitely make this vid.  There's so many directly applicable lines.  "I can't sleep 'cause my bed's on fire / don't touch me I'm a real live wire" would be shots of Will Graham writhing and flinching, "I hate people when they're not polite" is obviously Hannibal reacting to rudeness, "run run run away" is Will stumbling through the woods after the ravenstag, all that French could be laid over Hannibal in elegant European settings . . .  because in the end they are BOTH psycho killers . . .

Also, I skimmed through the list of panels that still needed more panelists, and saw that the Fanvid Discussion Deep Dive panel was on there. So I volunteered for that, and got on. Each panelist screens a vid (not one of their own) and talks about what they love about it. I really have no idea which vid I'll pick. There are plenty I love that fit in with WisCon's themes of feminism and scifi/fantasy!

[dreamwidth.org profile] vidding posted: Free or nearly free software for clipping large/ 1080p mkv files on mac
Trying to vid for the first time in years, and I've gone back to MPEG Streamclip for clipping purposes, but as well as no longer being as stable as it used to be, it doesn't seem to be able to deal with large .mkv files.

I have no problem clipping the .mkv that are around 1 gb 720p but can't deal with .mkv files that are around 4gb 1080p. (I'm not technically savvy enough to know whether it's the size or the encoding it's having an issue with).

Any recommendations for for newer software that might deal with files better? (I'm using Lightworks for the actual vidding)

[Unknown LJ tag] posted: Pillowfort is moving to .social
In the various discussions about PF's user content rules, legalities, social standards, and so on, someone happened to notice that PF's domain host, .io, doesn't allow adult content of any sort.

Oops.

Pillofort immediately started looking for a new domain extension. They found one, and have begun the process of shifting over. The site's been cloned; logins work; posting doesn't. They'll keep the .io addresses for at least a year (unless the NIC.IO staffers happen to notice them and cancel it in the meantime), but the whole site will be officially moving soon, like this month sometime.

... On the one hand, glad they're doing something about this. On the other, how am I supposed to trust they can manage user conflicts and TOS edge cases and the business hassles of running a social platform, when they didn't bother to look at their domain host's content rules.

[Unknown LJ tag] posted: Set up a Dreamwidth queue, drafts, and local backup on OS X

There isn't much I miss from my stay on Tumblr
and it's a great relief to spend more time on Dreamwidth--
and, these days, my feed reader.
However, there are still some functions that Tumblr has and Dreamwidth lacks, like a draft folder and the ability to queue posts.

Tumblr aside, I also found myself wanting to keep local copies of my posts
and to compose them in an editor with more robust functions, such as live Markdown preview,
than the DW editor offers.
I like the new DW beta editor but it's still not an actual text editor,
nor does it write to my own machine without an extra step like copy-paste.

So I figured, why not set it up on my computer?
It seemed simple enough with Dreamwidth's post by email function and Terminal on Mac.
It took me longer than I thought to get it working reliably
because there were a few different components to it, like Postfix, Bash, and Launchd.
