Charity 5/?: Women
This is part 5 in a series of posts suggesting possible charities to consider this holiday season. Today I wanted to focus on women. And keep in mind that in helping women, we're often helping entire families.

One of the first places on my charity list is Planned Parenthood. Planned Parenthood offers women critical health services and for many low and moderate income families it is the only source for annual gyn exams, pap smears, mammograms and family planning. It is hard to think of another group that positively impacts women's health in so many arenas.

Domestic violence is on the rise. The number of calls and hospital admissions has doubled since September in response to economic pressures. Again, this is where I suggest that people consider giving to their local women's shelter. In our case, the group is Next Door.

Sexual assault is also an area that impacts 1 out 4 women in our country. I suggest people consider donating to the Rape, Abuse, Incest National Network (RAIN) an organization that provides referrals to local groups that help women and children who have been sexually assaulted. In many areas rape crises hotlines are funded and staffed by the local YWCA (such as the Santa Clara Valley Rape Crises Hotline), so your money can help there.

And finally, I wish there were more organizations or charities assisting single parents - the statistics are dismal. 30% of single mothers live below the poverty line (making under $14,000 for a family of 2). After divorce ,the standard of living for divorced women and their children declines by up to 50% (while divorced men's income increases). Check with your local Catholic Charities - they sometimes offer programs for single parents.

Veterans, Hunger, Homeless, Women (this post), Children (forthcoming) and Furry Friends (forthcoming).
